About

The Building Department is responsible for the issuance of construction permits for new construction, alterations, demolitions, interior and exterior renovations, zoning permits, dumpster permits and Certificates of Occupancy.

Certificates of Occupancy are required for all resales, rentals and the opening of any new or existing business.

Permits

Below are some examples of what you would need a permit for. Please keep in mind this is only a guideline. Not all permits are listed here. Always call before you start any work to inquire if a permit is needed.

Residential
  • Fence
  • Walkway
  • Driveway
  • Pools
  • Patios
  • Pavers
  • Hot Tubs/Jacuzzis
  • Decks
  • Building Additions
  • Sidewalk
  • Sheds
Commercial
  • Signs
  • New Business
  • Change of Tenancy
  • Change of Ownership
  • Building Additions
  • Lot Alterations
  • Change of Use

Dumpster permits are required if you are putting the dumpster on the street. If you have a driveway where the dumpster can be stored, you DO NOT need a permit. The fees for a dumpster permit are as follows: the first three days is $50 and each additional day after that is $25 for a maximum of 7 days.

Please Note: Final inspections are required for all work or penalties will be issued.

Types of Certificates

  • Business Certificate applications require zoning as a prior approval. The first step is to write a letter of intent for your proposed business. If you plan on doing any construction, you must also submit one set of signed and sealed drawings. Please see the link under applications for “Instructions for Opening a New Business”.
  • Continued Certificate of Occupancy (CCO) applications are required any time a new tenant is moving in or a property is being sold. Please see the link under applications to print the forms.
  • Certificates of Approvals are issued after a construction permit has passed the final inspections. This means the work was done according to code and has been inspected by one of our licensed sub code officials.

Frequently Asked Questions

The UCC (Uniform Construction Code) mandates that when a Construction Official becomes aware of a property working without required permits and prior approvals, a notice of violation/order to pay penalty is issued to the property owner. Penalties start at $2,000 with an additional $2,000 to be added on each week the violation remains open.
