The DPW is responsible for the maintenance of Borough streets, salting of roads, snow plowing, pothole repairs as well as leaf collection at curbside from October 15th through December 15th of each year. This division also provides a 6 day a week street sweeper program that sweeps each Borough street at least once a week.

The Department also issues road opening permits for any utility connections or new construction that affects a municipal road. A permit application and related information can be found here.

The Borough currently maintains over 12 miles of municipal roadways.

Anderson Avenue, Fairview Avenue, Bergenwood Road are county roads owned by the County of Bergen. Edgewater Road is a county road as well, but is located in Cliffside Park.

Bergen Boulevard (Route 63) and Broad Avenue (Routes US 1&9) are state highways and are owned by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).

The DPW is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of pavement markings and signs on Borough owned roads. The division also paints curbs in no parking areas. The installation, maintenance and replacement of signs is performed by the traffic division. The DPW provides regular maintenance and daily essential cleaning of public buildings, internal mail and messenger services on a regular basis. Additionally the division has worked to develop a preventive maintenance program for the Borough's HVAC and mechanical systems.

The DPW maintains the Borough's parks (Veterans Park, 9-11/Police Memorial, Bergen Boulevard Park, Firemen’s Circle, Columbus Park and English Neighborhood Park). This includes planting, fertilizing, grass mowing as well as regular upkeep and cleaning of the parks and as needed repairs to playground rides.

The DPW has established a comprehensive maintenance plan for the nearly 600 storm drain inlets and manholes as well as approximately 13 miles of sanitary sewer in the Borough. This division also provides a 24 hour emergency service addressing all sewer backups that occur in the Borough. Sewer laterals for each particular property are owned from the dwelling to the main by the property owner. Please do not dump grease into the sewers as this causes build up in the pipes over time and adversely affects their capacity, possibly resulting in a backup for you and/or your neighbors.

Maintenance of storm drains is a key priority of the Department as well as compliance with applicable NJDEP requirements. The public can assist the Division by not disposing of garbage or bottles/cans into catch basins and keeping the areas near catch basin clean and free of debris. The DPW coordinates the daily engineering activities between the Borough’s in-house engineer and with the Borough's general engineering consultant. The Engineer supports the Department of Public Works with the following tasks:

• Diagnoses deficiencies to the Boroughs infrastructure and buildings
• Oversees repairs to roads, sewers and storm drains
• Prepares specifications for various infrastructure repairs
• Prepares specifications for the resurfacing of roads
• Assists with the preparation of grant applications
• Assist the building department and land use boards with plan review for various projects
• Other matters relating to the Borough's infrastructure needs.

Pickup is managed by the Fairview DPW and all garbage collections are contracted with a private contractor. The Borough directs the pickup of trash curbside Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Two (2) day-a - week pickup is provided for every Borough resident.

The borough provides recycling of commingled bottles, cans and plastic every Wednesday to all Borough residents via a contractor. Cardboard and newspapers are also collected every Wednesday. If you need a recycling barrel please contact the DPW at (201) 943-0857.

The division is responsible for several tasks which affect the appearance and safety of the Borough. These tasks are:

• Overcrowding/illegal apartments
• Property maintenance (tall grass, litter, etc.)
• Snow not removed from sidewalks in a timely manner
• Zoning violations
