Garbage, Recycling, & Metal Pickup Information

Garbage Pickup

Garbage is picked up twice a week by the Borough’s garbage hauler, JSI, Inc. of Jersey City. To find out which day garbage is picked up at your property and general rules for garbage collection, please click here.
Note: Wood furniture can be put out with your regular garbage. Mattresses can also be put out at the curb. Mattresses that have bedbugs must be wrapped.

Recycling Pickup

All recycling items are picked up on Wednesdays. Cardboard must be flattened and tied together so it does not blow away on windy days.
Glass bottles, plastic bottles and cans must be placed in a recycling barrel. 

Rules for Recycling

Items That Can Be Placed In Recycling Container For Pick Up:

  • Aluminum, Tin, and Metal cans
  • Empty Aerosol Cans
  • Glass Bottles and Jars
  • Plastic Beverage Containers
  • Milk and Juice Cartons
  • Soda, Laundry Detergent, and Bleach Bottles

No Styrofoam of any kind in any form

ALL OF THE ABOVE MUST BE EMPTIED AND RINSED TO REMOVE BEVERAGE OR FOOD WASTE.

Newspapers

  • Must be tied securely. Newspapers do not go into the recycling container, plastic bags or pails. Magazines, soft and hard cover books, and junk mail may be put out with the newspapers.
    Cardboard
  • Must be collapsed and tied, and placed at the curb the same day as the newspapers. Cardboard and newspapers must be secured to keep them from being blown away by strong winds.

Brush Pickup

Effective April 15th and continuing through November, the DPW picks up vegetative waste i.e. branches, shrubs and grass on Mondays.

  • Smaller items such as leaves and grass (if bagged) must be placed in biodegradable paper bags or sturdy non-¬disposable containers, no heavier than 50 pounds each and placed at the curb. Larger items such as branches and shrubs must be tied in bundles weighing no more than 50 pounds each and four (4) feet in length. DO NOT LEAVE ENTIRE TREE BRANCHES OUT AT THE CURB.
  • Logs and Stumps will not be picked up.
  • Loose leaves placed along the curb must be at least 10 feet away from a catch basin per NJDEP regulations.
  • Excess soil will not be picked up.
  • If you are having a tree removed, your contractor is responsible for removal of debris.
  • All property owners must maintain their lawns, shrubs and trees to keep the public right of way clear. All landscapers must remove all leaves and hard debris.

White Metal/Appliances/Electronics

Contact the DPW at (201) 943-0857 to schedule white metal, appliance and electronics pickup on Fridays or by appointment between 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. during the week.
Please note that doors on refrigerators must be taken off prior to being put at the curb.

Typical items for metal pickup: Washers, dryers, bedframes, refrigerators, dishwashers, window a/c units, mechanisms from pull out couches, TV’s, computer monitors.

Construction/Building and Demolition Materials

Materials from construction, renovations or demolition, including but not limited to sheetrock, shingles, cabinets, Formica, wood, etc. ARE NOT considered garbage, trash, or refuse and typically WILL NOT be collected by the Borough.

For one and two-family owner occupied dwellings, we will pick up two barrels of block, brick and construction items that are less than 50 lbs. in weight.

FOR DEVELOPERS AND CONTRACTORS, WE DO NOT PICK UP ANY TYPE OF WOOD (INCLUDING FENCING). THE DISPOSAL AND COST OF DUMPING THESE MATERIALS ARE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR OR PROPERTY OWNER. Contractors hired by borough residents are responsible for removing their debris.

House/Apartment Cleanouts

Garbage generated as part of a house or apartment cleanout is the responsibility of the cleanout contractor. It is not to be left at the curb.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Items such as paint thinner, cleaning product and other household chemicals that are no longer wanted can be dropped off at various BCUA disposal events. See www.bcua.org for additional information.

Paint

Water based paint can be put out for pickup after it has been dried out. Leave paint open for several days until the paint dries out. Oil based paint must be dropped off at a BCUA disposal event.

  • Paramus: Bergen Community College, 400 Paramus Road
  • Mahwah: Campgaw Mountain Reservation, 200 Campgaw Road
  • Moonachie: The foot of Empire Blvd. at the Bergen County Utilities Authority

Businesses must pre-register prior to attending BCUA sponsored collection events. No exceptions. A disposal fee will be charged and collected. Call 201-807-8696.

Snow

  • Do not shovel or plow snow into the roadway at any time.
  • For those property owners who have a fire hydrant in front of your dwelling, you are responsible for removing snow so it is accessible.
  • Sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours of the snow storm ending. All corner properties must shovel an access to the street.
